Maritime Museum

The Southampton Maritime Museum was opened in 1961 and houses one of the finest collections of maritime history in the world. The main exhibits are the story of the Titanic and the history of Southampton dockyard.

The Wool HouseThe Titanic exhibition tells the story of the ill-fated ship's sinking when it hit an iceberg in 1912. Through the voices of some of the survivors and the people of Southampton whose lives were affected by the disaster, the tragedy is brought to life.

Video presentations and a panoramic model are used to tell the story of Southampton dockyard, the successful years of the famous port, the people who worked there and those who travelled to and from Southampton.

Other attractions at the museum include an enormous model of the Queen Mary. Visitors will get a real feel for what it was really like to work on such a luxurious ship.

The Wool House is a part of history itself. It is the only medieval warehouse in Southampton that is still in use today. Built just after 1400, it was used to store wool waiting for export to Flanders and Italy. In the nineteenth century it was used to house French prisoners of war.
